In Switzerland, German is the most widespread native language and lingua franca, spoken by two thirds of the population. The local inhabitants speak various dialects of Swiss German.
Swiss High German is a variety of the German language that differs from it in several ways and has its own distinctive features in terms of vocabulary, word formation, morphology, syntax and spelling.
